From Elite Stereo:
The MJ-17D was Pioneers MiniDisc Recorder . The recordable MiniDisc was invented by Sony in the early 1990s, and most audio component companies eventually jumped on the MiniDisc bandwagon as a viable audio medium. Unfortunately, the Digital Compact Cassette was also coming onto the market, and the result was a format war.
Pioneer brought out the MJ-17D in the ELITE line not wanting to miss "the next big thing." As everyone knows, the MiniDisc did not take off with consumers as expected. By the late 1990s, interest in the format evaporated and Pioneer ceased production of the MJ-17D. Nevertheless, this unit is being snapped up by ELITE collectors because MiniDiscs are even smaller than CDs and used MJ-17Ds are less expensive today than many CD recorders. And, of course, the unit shares the unmistakable good looks of other ELITE components.
